I'm flipping out, but in a good way, over Alan November's keynote - Leadership: Managing the Transition.  Why am I so excited?  He put into words what I have been feeling for some time about where education should be heading.  Where's that?  Alan November suggests that maybe "student knowledge is where the action is."   Why's that?  Alan found that every time he showed student tutorials to students and asked them what they thought, they say "our teachers know too much, our teachers explains things like someone who already understands it."

I really like the idea of flipping the classroom because it empowers students to own their learning, but what I don’t understand is why all this flipping is focused so much on adult-created content.  Why aren’t we encouraging the students to flip themselves from student to teacher?  They certainly know how to explain concepts in ways that other kids understand - just think of all that YouTube content dedicated to subjects they are really interested in and knowledgeable about. As Thomas Suarez, 6th grade iPhone app developer points out in his TEDx video, it’s not exactly easy to figure out where to go when you want to learn something new like programming apps. I’m running into this myself, just helping my son create an independent study of Algebra 2 online - I can’t believe it’s so arduous. One thing we adults are pretty good at - reviewing and organizing content. Wouldn’t it be great if a site like Khan Academy started accepting student-created content - reviewed and organized by their experts!

Here are some folks also flipping out over student-created content:

Here's a really clever idea - Upside Down Academy!

The free and open source SlideSpeech system allows creation of on-line interactive guides. Adults and students can author collaboratively.  The live global education conference presentation of SlideSpeech is coming up, but a video version and interactive version with links are already available. The system can be used for cross cultural presentations or for communicating in other languages (for example, Spanish).
