Preparing my students for the future
Yesterday, while I was finishing my reports cards, doing final calculations to figure out my students final marks, writing their comments and giving them feedback. I couldn’t help but notice that the marks I gave my students were all quite high. Usually, my average marks are around a B. This year, I am teaching grade 9 for the first time and my approach, especially teaching in an…

A bit of a dill
NOTE: This blog post has only the most tenuous link to Global Education. I share it more for the members of this community to laugh at me. If you like my writing, my blog can be found at here.
---
This is sitting in my backyard. I'd like to tell it's story.
I am, it seems, a bit of a dill when it comes to anything to do with anything…

An end, a beginning
The reason I came to teach at Castlemaine North Primary School was that I wanted to know what was possible when you combined a great school, with hard-working teachers and open-minded students, with my passion for technology. Two years later, I think I have my answer.
Pretty much anything is possible. The highlights of the last two years would be too numerous to mention... but a video-enabled maths course enabling students to work at ten different levels simultaneously;, having seven…

Collaboration
I met Pam Allyn during her "Keynote" at the 2011 Global Conference! I was immediately drawn to her work, bringing the best of literature to children all over the world. Two days before Thanksgiving, I received information that Pearson Publishers were donating books to Navajo children for all the books that were read on-line by children. You could choose the organization you wanted the books to go to. The list of books for young children were…

Epic Mindshift
It isn’t often my whole conception of how I teach shifts, but it did yesterday. I had one of the most powerful conversations around education of my career yesterday. And the people who shifted my thinking were thirty-eight students between the ages of ten and twelve.
You may have picked up from my writing lately that the idea of gaming in education has been swirling around in my head since the Teaching and Learning with Vision conference. These two TED talks have also shaped my ideas…

A global community emerges
I really couldn't be happier with the way the Writers' club is shaping up. Check out this conversation on one of the student writer's blogs....
An author from Drysdale in Victoria, Australia is encouraged in his writing, and receives feedback from, students at Castlemaine North in Victoria, Australia and a student in Lahore, Pakistan. This occurred without prompting from the teacher, and…

Powers of Primes
The title to this blog post sounds suspiciously like the subtitle to the next Transformers sequel. I assure you, it isn't. The title in fact comes from an activity that I had assigned the students working at level 4.5 in the structure domain in mathematics (4.5 means high school material, a year ahead of where these students are chronologically).
Now, it's not the most exciting material, but I felt I did do a reasonable job of this particular instructional video...…

Communities of Collaboration
When I'm asked where I want to take technology and learning at Castlemaine North PS next, I usually show a version of this slide that I used at a couple of recent conferences.
If I think about how I use technology, and thus how I assume most adults who take advantage of technology use it, we aren't shoved into a single online community with a restricted audience and be told…

reality bites
Richard Close & Joni Schwartz shared some appalling stats during their Techniques on How to Handle Poverty presentation. It is truly shocking to find out how much our educational system is failing young black men, that children in poverty are facing educational trauma and that our…

believe
Belief is powerful stuff.
As John Mayer writes in his song Belief:
"Belief is a beautiful armor
But makes for the heaviest sword
Like punching under water
You never can hit who you're trying for"
Because it is so powerful, belief in things like plans, ideologies and pedagogies can definitely cause collateral damage and unintended consequences. What…

Learners presenting themselves to an online audience
A globally connected, networked and distributed learning environment gives the learner the opportunity to personalise their own learning through selecting technologies and approaches that match their learning styles and preferences. The learner should therefore carefully consider these options, as well as being aware of presenting themselves appropriately to an online audience. This is so that they can connect with an online audience, either through online classrooms or through other means…

A brief discussion of formative assessments and Ink Survey
In earlier posts, I have talked about the idea of a distributed, networked learning environment. Learning materials are accessible to thousands of students instead of a small cohort. Learners connect and learn from each other through technologies that allow learners to share and collaborate: wikis, blogs, discussion forums, instant messaging, video sharing, among others. Learning, therefore, becomes a globally connected endeavour.
If learning continues to…
