The State of Global Education:

Learning with the World and its People

Edited by Brad Maguth & Jeremy Hilburn

This book, to be published by Routledge, will include peer-reviewed manuscripts of research on ways in which teachers and students learn about and with the world and its people. The purpose of this book is two-fold: to explore the theoretical foundations of global education, and to initiate a conversation to begin to answer the question, what are the characteristics of the next generation of global education? We broadly call this next generation, Global Education 2.0.  The text will be divided into three sections:

  • Global Education 1.0 – Foundations - This section presents an overview of foundational research conducted in the area of global education so readers can better understand the rationale, opportunities, and challenges that have faced the field of global education.


  • Global Education 2.0 in Theory - This section presents research that sets a future path for global education in an increasingly technological, multicultural, and global age. Research in this section could center on ways in which global education can be reconstructed and strengthened.  Potential topics include research connecting issues of race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class, to teaching and learning about and with the world and its people.


  • Global Education 2.0 in Action - This section presents research on the practices of global education and offers a view of what the next generation of global education may look like in action. This could include the following: research that’s centered on students learning about and with the world and its people, global  issues (in school and out of school), the ways in which a global perspective enhances students’ ability to serve as stewards of their planet, and practices that foster global learning and global action to help build a sustainable and more equitable future for all citizens of our planet. Research topics may also include research on the meaningful integration of technology to help students learn about and with the world and its people, or other meaningful global learning opportunities.

  • July 1, 2013                          Chapter proposal abstracts due
  • July 15, 2013                        Authors identified and contacted
  • December 15, 2013             Manuscripts due
  • December 20, 2013             Manuscripts sent for external review; authors also review one other manuscript
  • March 1, 2014                      Authors receive feedback from three reviewers
  • May 1, 2014                         Second draft due
  • July 1, 2014                          Final draft due
  • August 20, 2014                  Editors send final manuscript into publisher
  • September 2014                  Book is published
