I absolutely agree… even the thought of continuing to teach definitive subjects such as math and social studies is very ‘un-21st Century’. If we know that learners require opportunities to interact and connect with the learning experience, then why do educators force them to learn in isolation? Real life problems involve knowledge and skills from all concentrations. It gives meaning to the learning, thus creating a lasting understanding. But is this possible? Can we transform schools to be more holistic when approaching 21st Century learning? What can we do in the mean time?

Non-cerebral areas. Physical education; art, dance, theater, music. Sewing and knitting and woodworking. Meditation and yoga. Hiking, camping, bicycling. Walking! Cooking. Home and small appliance repair. Robotics. Conflict resolution. Sex ed. Games.

Also: advanced problem solving and real-life internships.

I agree with you and am sorry to see this site is not very active.
Because of my concern I am creating an online course in the history of art and architecture.

Precisamente, en Michoacán, México estamos implmentando con la Red de maestros ambientalista con la Carta de la Tierra, el método de Educación ambiental a través del Arte y la Carta de la Tierra, desarrollado en la educación no formal comunitaria por Cardiela Amézcua (aval de la Carta de la Tierra) y ahora integrada a la educación formal, que impactará a más de 100,000 niñas y niños de educacón básica. Este método integra la danza, música, pintura, dibujo, teatro, literatura, cine y medios virtuales, en las comunidades de aprendizaje, en espiral: docentes, alumnos y alumnas, escuelas, familias, población, estado, país, mundo. Desde una visión no antropocéntrica con la premisa básica: en el mundo todo esta unido.

I concur. I used to teach Foreign Language before I became a tech coordinator--and we were thought of as "secondary" or "extra". In all other developed countries, FL study is a deep core running through the student's career--not waiting until middle school or high school when it's more difficult to learn. I do think that math, science, LA and history must be included --you can't begin to problem-solve or think critically without starting with basics of human knowledge--but I think the key is how these and other subjects are taught. Project-based learning, global awareness, and developing life-long learners is what will mostly help our students in the future.

21st Century Skills include collaboration, problem- solving, design, and what I called "multitasking". Students must be able to read, comprehend, analyze and evaluate multiple texts and synthesize this information relatively quickly. They must also be able to discern what's valid information & what is not- which is a huge problem amongst my 8th graders!!

and they must do this by being pluralingual and multicultural. Kids want to communicate with the world and they cannot do this if they are monolingual.

I agree Tracy. These skills can be achieved by students through Media Literacy curriculum, but there are many places in the world where this curriculum do not exist yet, like my country (Romania).

It is a shame that the value of foreign language and culture skills continues on the side lines. As I research definitions of 21st century global leaders/leadership or skills for the 21st century global workplace, there is rarely a mention of language or culture. YET, many put "global" in their title. Trying to start making a difference with a group at www.nble.org where we are trying to bring attention to Language and Culture Skills for the 21st Century Workplace. There are just a few of us now, but we hope to grow the project little by little.

I totaly agree about language learning, the established institutional learning environments will say that there are not the teachers to cover minority languages. In a digital world everyone can be a teacher and a learner . Look at the idea of a "school of everything" where people just ask if there is a tutor for anything and tutors can sign up to teach others. http://schoolofeverything.com/ what a great idea, all stemming from Ivan Illich's book Deschooling.
