Lucy has suggested that we develop an "elevator pitch" to persuade others as to the importance of global education/global competency. I'll start the ball rolling with why I believe education for global competency is important, and others can refine it.
Today's most complex issues and realities (the globally interconnected economy and financial system; global ecological sustainability; global health; and global security) can no longer be compartmentalized or addressed in isolation. These domains are shared by all peoples of the planet, and require global approaches and solutions.Today's students must be prepared to collaborate as partners and stewards of a globally diverse, interdependent world. Promoting the skills of global competency, and and practicing global collaboration in classrooms today will enhance our collective potential for prosperity and survival in the future.
I look forward to hearing the perspectives of others.

I am thinking that besides being limited to a few sentences, an elevator-speech must keep the listener's attention from sentence to sentence. How about this:
"Global education in our schools is as important today as computer literacy used to be. At this point in time most students know how to exchange information globally through the internet; but, they don't know how or what to communicate. Just as when computer-use was new, they cannot get global education at home. Mom and Dad cannot teach them how to avoid misunderstandings in a text-only relationship. Or specific terms or parts of speech to avoid because they convey a deeper-meaning when communicated globally. School is the only place this kind of teaching and learning can happen. It is up to us to prepare them for the global framework of the 21st century."
Well? I know the wording is a bit too formal; but, do you think it meets the goal of short-but-convincing?

Educators can and must lead the way. You're welcome to share my materials. Unfortunately my last posting seems to have had the wrong url. Hope this new one works!

Register with ID = global and KEY = wise
Why not set up a joint course with a few globalwise colleagues? I'll fix that for free, of course.

You 've convinced me! I like the fresh perspective and new analogy you bring here. (I hope Lucy Gray is watching--it was she who originally suggested the elevator pitch.)
Are you a specialist in "specific terms or parts of speech to avoid because they convey a deeper meaning when communicated globally"? Sounds like this could become the seeds of a helpful presentation at the GEC 2011 Conference....

Permalink Reply by Patricia E. Barrett on October 21, 2011 at 3:12pm RE: "how does an educator of a global-competence curriculum include content that is truly 'global' and not merely drawn from their own realities/perspectives?"
I believe that the content/curriculum itself must be designed from the broadest perspective, and that such curriculum cannot be taught by someone with a narrower or more limited perspective/experience than the curriculum. I have not personally experienced the International Baccalaureate curriculum, but I'll bet those who have, and those who have taught it have already thought about this question.

Permalink Reply by Andrea Hildreth on October 16, 2011 at 6:09pm Your location in Puerto Rico makes me realize that it's easy to have an "island-view" of the world; even if we are part of a large continent, part of a large state or a large family. Maybe helping folks to see the bridges between the islands is our challenge. Wonder what reinforces this island-view: fear? greed? the unknown?
What are your thoughts about Global Education as a force against the tendency to have an "island-view"?
