Use Design Thinking to Integrate Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) into STEM

Barbara Bray
Rethinking Learning
California, USA

Target Audience(s): K-12 Teachers, Professional Developers, Instructional Coaches, Administrators

The design thinking process starting with empathy helps teachers design activities that encourage deeper learning and self-advocacy so learners of all ages can make a difference.

Since the UN developed 17 Sustainable Development Goals that are available to every human being on this planet to refer to and do something about, why not start with our kids? After all, this involves them and their future. Each SDG is big on their own, but what if we shake up how we teach STEM so learners are driving their learning based on empathy around one or all of the goals? In 2015, countries adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. If we use this framework and ask our kids what could you do to help build a better world. then kids could collaborate to identify one of the #GlobalGoals and develop a prototype on how they could do something to make a difference.

The presentation will include:

1. Overview of the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals and resources available on the site.

2. Introduction to the Design Thinking Process (refer to Digital Promise Micro-credential on Design Thinking)

Empathy - Define - Ideate - Prototype - Refine

3. Review 4 SDGs and the resources available facts, figures and goals, and resources.

4. How Design Thinking can change the thinking about teaching and learning around this SDG and walk through the process so kids can do more and better with less.

5. Call to Action: Use the Design Thinking process and the SDGs to solve real-world, authentic problems so your kids can make a difference in the world.
