Hey Julia -

Great start to asking for help. The more details, though, that you can provide, the better. So, my questions for you might be:

  • When is your project due?
  • What has the teacher said about what  you need to do?
  • What product do you have to show at the end of your project? a web site? posters? a Power Point presentation?
  • What is your goal of this project?
    • To teach others and create more awareness of what's going on with this famine?
    • To raise money to support relief efforts?
    • To make a directory of organizations that are helping in Africa?  (e.g Save the Children, Oxfam)

I'm also wondering if people in this network know of organizations that help kids participate in supporting relief efforts. What else is available to kids in terms of service learning? UNICEF's Trick or Treat program is one effort that we know about, but that will happen after your project is due. I think it would be really cool to find out about online projects/events that involve kids in making a difference.

Hope others will chime in!

The project is for my Common Good teacher @ NBJH and I want to donate food, warter and/or money to a charity like UNICEF...

Julia,

At our school, students raise awareness and money at the same time by selling something that students at their school want.

For instance, during lunch students might sell Krispy Kreme donuts, frozen yogurt, or churros; each buyer also gets a little slip of paper with a fact about the issue or country their project is about.

If you get local businesses to give you their product at a cheaper price, you can make a good profit and donate to UNICEF.  Sometimes the businesses will give you their product for free if they like your charity.

Best of luck!

George

Read this article about how someone your age is raising money to fight hunger in Somalia:

Mom

Here are some other ideas that a teacher posted in his blog:

Kiva is a great organization where we can lend money to someone to start a business. Let's think about that as an option.

Me

Hi,

I'm interested in lesson planning and educational assessment in special education  in different countries. I'm teaching in a college for teacher education in Israel, my students plan and teach pupils with severe difficulties. We plan and implement teaching units based on the regual curriculum, adapted to pupils with special needs.

 Thank you

Dita

Hi Julia I know this late however I organise trips and work with primary schools in rural South Africa where drought is also an issue and not well publised...the schools have up to 90 students in a class. One of my children's schools is raising money for well and some students are planning to raise money to buy trees..check out our website www.aidafricfoundation.com
