Open University Initiatives in Developing Countries: What Works?

Short Session Description: A brief update on my research efforts in Nepal regarding the Open University of Nepal initiative and the implementation of online learning throughout the country.


Full Session Description:

My research study seeks to evaluate a pedagogical model designed for an open university in Nepal, based on the geographical, regional and linguistic diversity of Nepalese learners. The resulting model will serve as a construct for open university initiatives in Nepal and in other developing countries.

The session will discuss my findings and experiences to date. As this is a very ‘exploratory’ project, findings may be surprising.

The presentation will be of interest to anyone involved in online learning and in particular those interested in the potential for online learning in developing countries. The Internet affords us a great opportunity to bring global knowledge to remote regions of the world.

We hope the presentation will be informative, and will motivate others to use new technology to assist all students, anywhere, anytime to access and learn from the knowledge available online.

I look forward to interesting and vibrate online discussions in November!

Dear Susan!  Your project is very great because you want to help children who need it very much. I wish you good luck in it! My friend is also going to work in Africa and help schools with computers and education. It's great when we can help those who is in need.

Thank you for your comment.

Actually my project will be for adults who have not had the opportunity to further/or complete their education because of their location or their other committments. Yet in an indirect way it helps children also, as their parents will be able to further their education and therefore assist their families and communities.

I wish your friend success in Africa.

Sorry for the delayed response. I was working in Far West Nepal and just returned. The project is challenging and I hope I can clarify more of it during the presentation.

Wow.  Our 18 year old daughter just spent 6 months in Nepal for a humanitarian group focused on village self-development.  Can't wait to hear this session.
