Short Session Description (one line): Using Virtual PLCs to bring teachers together to develop global completencies.
Full Session Description (as long as you would like): Professional development (PD), immersing educators in extended instructional inquiry through professional learning communities (PLCs), is valuable in enhancing instruction. Obstacles to effective PLCs include deficiencies in shared collaboration time and common objectives. Assembling educators from various districts lessens these challenges, but teachers are hesitant to travel for collaborations. Technology presents solutions to these challenges while nurturing the sense of community essential for PLCs. If teachers are going to move toward developing 21st century skills in a global context, they first must be immersed in developing their own skills in a global context. Without developing their own content and pedagogical knowledge of 21st century skills in a global context, educators cannot effectively teach students these skills; there needs to be a globalization of teacher education and professional development (PD). In order for globalization of PD to occur, collaboration must become an essential part of the school’s culture. These PLCs will increase teacher self-efficacy in 21st century skills, teacher quality, and student achievement as the teachers work collaboratively to discover, create, innovate, and negotiate new implications that will improve their profession; PLCs improve teacher quality including: connecting teacher practice with research, establishing spaces for tackling problems of practice, relating pedagogical practice with content area knowledge, developing transformative teaching, and increasing student learning. Including technology as a tool to create a virtual PLC allows for collaboration beyond the physical space of the school to connect people. Eliminating physical boundaries allows teachers to expand their collaboration and thinking by establishing virtual PLCs based on common interests. This means that educators desiring to develop 21st century skills in a global context must participate in a virtual PLC with global educators from around the world to develop the skills themselves.
