For many educators, use of the internet and social media has become an integral part of work inside the classroom. Teachers and students are able to share their ideas and collaborate online from anywhere in the world. The possibilities for digital collaboration and virtual exchange have become essentially unlimited, but does this educational landscape allow all students to feel a sense of shared power inside of a digital exchange?

One of the most influential issues surrounding the virtual exchange experience is the large (and growing) disparity in access to modern technology and digital literacy across socioeconomic structures and locations. Certain members of the global education system are devalued, not because their ideas are less constructive but because their capacity to express these ideas in a digital landscape is restricted. To capture the full power of these global learning webs, it is crucial to focus on what we value in terms of the relationship between the partners. Is the speed of an email response more valuable than the quality of an idea? Is a PowerPoint more valuable than simple text? Is producing content more valuable than inclusive collaboration? 
 
This session will dive into the tools teachers need to ensure digital communication and collaboration is inclusive - no matter who you are working with. Concepts explored will be asynchronous learning, empathy building and cultural communication. Using real examples from Know My World exchanges, and insights from experienced facilitators, participants will gain tips and resources for maximizing digital collaboration inside of a virtual exchange experience with partners from all levels of accessibility in the world.
