Global Education through Hip Hop: Teaching about the Palestinian Territories, a Case Study

Your Name and Title:

Elisheva Cohen, Outreach Coordinator

School or Organization Name:

Middle East Studies Center, Portland State University

Co-Presenter Name(s):

Area of the World from Which You Will Present:

Oregon, USA

Language in Which You Will Present:

English

Target Audience(s):

Teachers

Short Session Description (one line):

Learn how to teach global issues through hip hop

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

In the past 20 years, hip hop music and art has evolved as a global medium of creative self expression.  This platform of beats, rhythms, lyrics, dance, and art gives a voice to many who often go unheard.  Hip hop has played an important role in social and political movements around the world, most recently in the revolutions and changes taking place due to the Arab spring.

As a popular and accessible form of social and political protest, education through hip hop has risen as a pedagogical tool that encourages critical thinking about local and global issues.

This session will explore methods of teaching with hip hop using Palestinian hip hop as a case study.  Participants will review a brief history of hip hop and the power it can have in the classroom.  We will then look specifically at Palestinian hip hop and ways in which it can be used in the classroom to teach about various themes.  Participants will end the session by considering how they can use hip hop from around the world to teach global themes in their classroom.

Thanks for your submission to present at the 2011 Global Education Conference. Your proposal looks promising, but could benefit from some additional language that ties your work to the conference theme of global collaboration. Your proposed session may imply global collaborations and connections, but we need to see more explanation of how your work ties into our mission. The conference seeks to present ideas, examples and initiatives related to connecting educators and classrooms around the world with an emphasis on promoting global awareness and instilling global competency in students. This is not a general education conference nor a technology conference. Please review your submission and adjust accordingly, so that participants clearly understand how your work fits into the mission of the conference.
