Short Session Description (one line):

DeforestACTION is a global learning project connecting students around the world to learn about, and take action on, the pressing issue of deforestation by using innovative social media and technology tools that make learning about global issues fun and exciting!

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Humans are destroying the world's forests at an alarming rate.  When forests are logged or burnt, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere – accelerating global climate change. So much carbon is being released that deforestation is responsible for one fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Offered in partnership between TakingITGlobal, Microsoft, and the Centre for Global Education, DeforestACTION is a global movement of youth and schools taking action to stop deforestation and create a permanent habitat for orangutans and other species that depend on forest ecosystems. This global learning project is currently focused on the forests of Indonesia, where widespread illegal deforestation has made the country the world’s third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases. Since 2010, DeforestACTION has connected over 17,000 youth and students around the world learn more about, and collaborate across borders, to address the pressing issue of deforestation.

During this session, we will share the global learning opportunities associated with DeforestACTION, which engages students in project-based learning about deforestation and environmental sustainability. By showcasing the DeforestACTION educational resources, social media and technology tools, you can learn more about this opportunity to help students develop global competencies through international collaborations.  In particular, you will:
  • Learn more about the DeforestACTION virtual learning platform and educational resources that students use to engage in online, collaborative learning about deforestation with their global peers;
  • Become familiar with the online collaboration spaces used by the DeforestACTION community, which leverages social networking technology to allow students to collaborate and showcase school awareness and fundraising initiatives to a global audience;
  • Become familiar with the various technology tools available through DeforestACTION, including the Earthwatchers software that allows students across the planet to monitor forests via satellite imagery and provide usable intelligence to stop deforestation; and
  • Watch clips of online events and student-produced videos that share accomplishments of schools around the world taking DeforestACTION.
