Art, Media and Human Rights in Global Education: A Study of Chile

Abstract

In her presentation, Sasha Harrison delves into historical and contemporary ways in which the worlds of art and media contribute to human rights awareness and political change in global contexts.  The author examines economic, social and cultural human rights as they are addressed in art and media and utilized in Chilean history for political and social change.  She continues by exploring changing leadership, international influence and response, Michelle Bachelet’s presidency, and various educational paradigms.  She uses multiple student protests to explain Chilean education and the relationship to human rights as globalization contributes to setting the stage for increased calls for equality and development.  The author concludes with proposals informed by research from Dr. Madhu Viswanathan and Dr. Martha Nussbaum.  She believes that in order to facilitate a more equitable distribution of human rights to all citizens of the world, the articles found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as sustainable ideas and methods should be taught in curriculums internationally.
